Currently, the Bee Ridge Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) is a 143-acre treatment plant originally constructed in the 1990s. Sarasota County operates the plant as a secondary wastewater treatment facility, designed to produce 12 million gallons per day (MGD) of reclaimed water. In 2020, the County proceeded with plans to expand the facility's capacity to 18 MGD and upgrade its processes to achieve Florida's standards for advanced wastewater treatment (AWT).

The Bee Ridge Water Reclamation Facility Expansion Design will upgrade it to advanced wastewater treatment, and it WON Carollo the Award of Envision Gold Status for sustainable infrastructure at Bee Ridge. This is the first time a treatment plant has gotten gold status. "Envision Gold Status" refers to a level of achievement within the Envision sustainability rating system for infrastructure projects, signifying that a project has demonstrated a high level of environmental, social, and economic benefits to the community, surpassing the standard level and reaching a significant milestone towards sustainability.

The facility's transformation into a state-of-the-art water reclamation facility, will increase its capacity up to 50% while implementing Advanced Wastewater Treatment technologies, this includes, Biological Nutrient Removal basins and Florida's largest Membrane Bio Reactor system. These upgrades will significantly reduce nitrogen and phosphorus discharges, which contribute to algae growth in waterways.

The project required innovative approaches to engineering design and financing. Sarasota County secured a $105 million Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act low interest loan, federal funding that helps utilities deliver infrastructure improvements while minimizing rate impacts on customers.


Completion is scheduled for the end of 2025.
